The History of Springfield

The area that would become the City of Springfield was first inhabited by the Osage, Delaware and Kickapoo tribes. These tribes abandoned the area after they were forced to move by federal authorities in the 1800s. Eventually, white settlers began arriving and building homes and businesses.

One of the first settlers to come to this area was John Polk Campbell, who arrived with his brother from Tennessee in 1830. He settled on a small stream, a natural well and opened a general store, attracting other settlers.

As the years went by, a few railroad lines passed through town, and downtown Springfield grew and developed. Commercial Street and other streets became a hub of activity. During this period, the city was a center of trade and commerce, but it also became a destination for tourists.

During the Civil War, Springfield served as a resting place for Union soldiers, including five African American buffalo soldiers buried at the National Cemetery on Kickapoo Prairie. The cemetery's 18 acres is filled with a variety of memorials and tombstones to honor those who gave their lives in service of the United States.

Today, the city is a center of cultural life, with its diverse arts and culture scene supporting over 2,200 full-time jobs in the region. The sector drives economic impact through its programming, collaboration and leadership efforts.

The Springfield News-Leader is the main daily newspaper in the city, and the city is home to several other newspapers. The Springfield Business Journal, The Standard and Ozarks Independent are other regional publications that cover the area.

The number of tourists in the city is growing each year, with visitors coming to enjoy a variety of events, restaurants and attractions. It is estimated that more than 1.5 million people visit the area each year.
