The History of Springfield

Before the first settlers arrived in 1829, the land on which the city stands was inhabited by the Osage, Delaware, and Kickapoo tribes. They left behind flint arrows and lance beads, stone axes, and pottery to prove their presence.

In 1829, John Polk Campbell arrived with his brother from Tennessee and settled on the site. He was attracted to the area by a natural well and small stream. He deeded 50 acres for the county seat and built a two-story brick building in the center of the public square.

Today, Springfield is a modern city with a rich heritage. The city has numerous historical sites to visit, including several museums, a theater, and the historic downtown district.

The History of Springfield

In the early 1800s, Springfield was a bustling town and the center of commerce in Greene County. It supported some 1,200 people and had three hotels, two newspapers, five schools, and a bank by the time it was incorporated in 1838.

A number of different businesses, including a woolen mill and a cotton mill, began to spring up around the city as manufacturing began to take hold. The town also became a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach line, which brought more people to the area.

When the railroad came to town in 1870, it brought even more business and created a further economic boost for the city. The city became a major commercial hub with 150 business houses by 1878.

During the Civil War, the city was a battleground and a target of the Confederates, who retreated after a Union garrison repelled a Confederate attack. The town also helped to give birth to the Wild West with the shootout between James "Wild Bill" Hickok and Dave Tutt in July 1865, a gambling dispute that led to the first quick-draw gunfight.

The town square was also the scene of a lynching in 1905, when three African-American men were killed for allegedly rapping a white woman. This event sparked an exodus of African-Americans from the city, which remains a minority today.
